Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Drive the strategy and product vision for Android at WSJ, leveraging what is unique about the Android member base, OS and business opportunity.

  • Define objectives and key results (OKRs) for Android, tied to broader WSJ product objectives, and employ them in coming up with a rolling 3 month roadmap, and longer term prioritized backlog.

  • Develop a strong relationship with our Google contacts in order to increase visibility for our brand and products: leading to ease of monetization— choosing when to partner on new initiatives and technologies, how to get in front of and take advantage of device and OS changes.

  • Shape and drive awareness around Android metrics: what they mean and how they surface performance against our baselines. This should include engagement and performance/stability oriented key results as well as revenue oriented ones.

  • Foster appreciation for and increase visibility of the apps and Android in the company at large. Get colleagues to beta test. Educate the rest of the organization towards realizing what a massive opportunity it represents.

  • Grow a collaborative culture supporting the Android apps among the core group including: engineers, project manager, product lead, designer, UX lead and editorial lead.

  • Harness and strengthen the relationship with the broader stakeholder group including: advertising, marketing, membership, customer service, analytics, etc. in efforts to come up with more customer focused, easier to monetize products with a smoother path to market.

  • Partner with other members of the product team and broader PDE group (Product, Design, and Engineering) in devising products that work seamlessly from both a functional and brand perspective across platforms and devices.

  • Work with the Newsroom to develop a honed approach on how to tell stories better and differently in a mobile first, native implementation on Android versus on web. Develop the product to support this effort from the ground up.

  • Continue to refine expertise on the differences in iOS versus Android OS and how to get the best out of both

  • Communicate with stakeholders to keep all teams informed on product releases, performance metrics, future rollouts and activity with Android.

  • Oversee beta testing of app and feature launches, including reproducing and documenting bugs found in distributed user testing cyclines

  • Perform vendor analysis and recommend integrations when and where where it makes sense

  • Create discovery presentations to get core and broader team buy in with regard to OKRs around epics and projects. Author requirements and gather user feedback. Write user stories and product requirements documents.

  • Develop the product within the Agile Scrum framework: including sprints, sprint reviews, sprint planning, retrospectives and planning sessions.  Team with the project manager and engineering leads to architect a process that works for the team, is adhered to, but leaves room for continued evolution.

  • Be the primary resource for the org as far as best practices, industry trends and competitive landscape when it comes to all things Android.

  • Use A/B testing tools to optimize performance and revenue opportunities

  • Be fearless in launching, experimenting, and shuttering products when it is time

  • Be the accountable person from Discovery all the way through Launch and Go to Market. Ensure successful launch of all apps projects.

  • Be relentless in helping shift the mindset in the newsroom to thinking about mobile first, before anything else

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience as a Mobile Product Lead, best if Android focused

  • A real passion for building best in class mobile apps-- particularly media focused

  • Deep knowledge of Android OS and experience developing applications with it

  • Experience working in media, with editors in a newsroom preferred

  • Strong leadership skills and experience leading in a matrixed organization a must

  • Experience working in Agile scrum-based frameworks, with iterative releases

  • Strong presentation skills, and facility building strong arguments when getting buy in from teams across the organization

  • Experience working in a metrics-drive-product organization, ideally with OKRs (Objectives and Key Results), and with setting high level objectives set against associated key results

  • Proven track record in launching products and seeing them from Discovery, Testing, Prototyping, Design, Build, QA, all the way through Go to Market.
